Axial Flux Motor Price: What You Actually Pay, and Why

By the Turncircles engineering team · Published

Searching for the price of an axial flux motor usually ends in a wall of "request a quote" buttons. We think a price should be readable before you pick up the phone, so here are the real numbers for a custom axial flux motor, what drives them, and how to lower them.

The short version: you can configure and simulate for free, engineering starts at €6,000, and materials for a typical order cost €4,000 to €12,000.

The Short Answer

For a custom axial flux motor from Turncircles, the price has two parts: engineering, which is a one-off fee per motor design, and materials, which scale with size and quantity. Configuring and simulating cost nothing.

ItemPrice (EUR, excl. VAT)Notes
Customizing and simulation0Community plan
Electrical design6,000Always included, charged after simulations confirm performance
Mechanical design6,000Optional. Skip it if you integrate the active parts yourself
Project management and documentation1,960Waived when you use the configurator app
Materials4,000 to 12,000Typical order, depends on size and quantity

Add it up for a complete motor ordered through the configurator and you land between roughly €16,000 and €24,000 for the first motor, engineering included. That is a prototype-and-design price, not a per-unit price. The pricing page has an estimator that moves as you answer two questions.

Why There Is No Sticker Price

An axial flux motor is not a commodity with a catalogue number. Its price follows from design choices that change from one application to the next:

  • Diameter and stacks. More active area and more stacks mean more magnet and more copper.
  • Magnet grade and quantity. Neodymium is the largest material cost and the longest lead time.
  • Stator technology. A multilayer PCB stator and a DCB stator on ceramic are different manufacturing routes with different costs.
  • Housing and protection. A naked motor has no housing to pay for. An IP67 housed motor does.
  • Quantity. The engineering fee is fixed. One motor carries all of it, ten motors carry a tenth each.

A "price per kilowatt" would hide all of that, and would be wrong for most buyers. We would rather show you the structure.

"Axial Flux Motor for Sale": How to Buy One

If you searched for "axial flux motor for sale" or "buy axial flux motor" hoping for a shelf of boxed motors, here is the slightly awkward truth: we do not keep one. Every Turncircles motor is built to a specification, which is exactly why it fits. The upside is that the specification takes minutes, not weeks.

  1. Open the configurator and enter torque, speed, voltage and diameter.
  2. Read the simulated performance and the price estimate.
  3. Order the engineering, then the parts. Expect up to about 50 days for magnets and rotors.

If you only need a motor to experiment with, the minimum order is one. If you are not sure the motor exists yet in your head, a design-only order gets you the electrical design without buying a single magnet.

Where the Price Comes Down

  • Quantity. From about 8 to 10 motors the cost per motor becomes economically viable.
  • The configurator app. Using it waives the €1,960 project management and documentation fee.
  • Active parts only. If you integrate rotors and stators into your own structure, the €6,000 mechanical design is not needed. See naked motors.
  • A right-sized motor. A motor designed for the actual duty cycle is not oversized, which saves magnet and copper.

Price Is Not the Same as Cost

A motor is bought once and run for years. A quick, illustrative example: a 5 kW shaft-power motor running 4,000 hours a year. At 90% efficiency it draws 5.56 kW from the supply, at 96% it draws 5.21 kW. The difference is 0.35 kW, which over 4,000 hours is about 1,390 kWh, or roughly €280 per year at €0.20 per kWh. Multiply by a motor life of several years, and by the number of motors, and efficiency starts to argue with the purchase price.

Weight does the same in mobile machines: every gram saved in the motor is a gram the battery does not have to carry. That is the argument in why we need lighter electric motors and in the torque and power density guide.

Illustrative figures. Your efficiency, duty cycle and energy price will differ.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does an axial flux motor cost?

A custom Turncircles axial flux motor costs, for a typical first order, about €16,000 to €24,000 including engineering (€6,000 electrical design, optional €6,000 mechanical design) and materials (typically €4,000 to €12,000). Configuring and simulating are free. Prices exclude VAT.

Is there a cheaper way to get an axial flux motor?

Yes, three. Order more units (the cost per motor becomes economically viable from about 8 to 10), use the configurator app to waive the €1,960 project management fee, and order active parts only if you can integrate them yourself.

Can I buy a ready-made axial flux motor from stock?

Not from us. Each motor is built to the specification you configure. The configurator gives you the design and price in minutes, and parts follow within about 20 to 50 days.

Why are axial flux motors more expensive than radial ones?

Often they are not, once you compare like with like. Catalogue radial motors are mass-produced; a custom axial flux motor carries design cost that a catalogue motor spreads over thousands of units. At application level, lower weight, higher efficiency and no gearbox can outweigh the difference.

Do you offer a price for 10 kW or 100 kW axial flux motors?

The configurator covers up to 56 kW, so a 10 kW motor is a regular configuration. A 100 kW motor is beyond that range and needs an engineering conversation. See axial flux motor sizes.
